How to Overcome Writer's Block

Updated: Sep 24, 2018

Is your dream to become a well-known writer? If this is so, you might already have written a lot of pieces, some of which you think are actually good. However, there are also a lot of moments when you feel lost, when you keep starting at that blank page with no idea what you should put on it next. If this is true of you, you will be happy to know that today, you can start overcoming writer's block with these few great steps. Here are three things you can do to get started.

1. Doing another thing that is creative. There are times when you might feel stuck, and you just stare at your screen or your paper, not knowing what to do. What you should do, then, is to take a little break and to do other things which inspire your creativity. For example, you can paint a picture, try writing a poem, or even go into the shed and build something. This might come a surprise to you, but doing anything that is creative will spark up your writing as well. After a few hours, or maybe even a few days, you will come back to your writing feeling inspired.

2. Do some free writing. If you get stuck trying to find the perfect words for your writing project, you should stop right there. You should instead get a piece of paper or open a new document, and start writing, just going and going for 15 or 20 minutes. The free writing will get all of the words that are stuck in your mind down, and what is more, you might find that you have ideas that you did not think about lingering in your mind. The important thing is to just keep going, not thinking about grammar, punctuation, and so on. It is surprising what you can come up with through doing this.

3. Exercise. This might seem like a surprise to you, as how is exercising connected with writing? However, it really can help you. This is because when you exercise, moving your body around or doing something like yoga and meditation, you get into a more peaceful state. The quieter your mind is, the more your imagination will be able to flow. You don't really have to work out hard in the gym to get this creative juice flowing. Taking a little time to do stretching or breathing exercises will really do a lot of difference.
